Ephesians 6:16

“In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.”

The Devil attacks the people of God because that is his nature. He hates us and wants to destroy our witness and joy…knowing that he can’t destroy our salvation. But it’s important to remember that God allows him to do so, because it provides an excellent opportunity to grow and mature in our faith (read the Book of Job).

Reality dictates that these attacks will be a normal part of the Christian life, which leaves you with two choices: defeat or victory. In defeat, you put your shield of faith in a box and keep it tucked away somewhere. You live in fear and anxiety and joy is rarely experienced. In victory, your shield is held high and allows you to repel the enemy’s flaming arrows. You live out your faith boldly, compassionately, and confidently. You take part in God’s victories as His Kingdom advances. Yes, there will be difficult days…but you will weather the storm with patience and assurance.

One final thought: faith is based on what God has said…what God has promised…and what God has done. It is the assurance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen (Heb. 11:1). The Word of God, the engagement of your spiritual gifts, and the fellowship of the saints nurture it. By faith, Joshua took a city – Caleb took a mountain – David took a nation – and the Disciples took on the world. With the shield of faith, we can do the same.
