Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.
James Madison, the fourth President of the United States, said, “We have staked the whole future of American civilization not upon the power of government. Far from it. We have staked the future upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves and to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God.” Our Founding Fathers understood that only a religious and moral people could govern themselves…but sadly, that understanding in 21stcentury America has largely disappeared.
America has aborted over 60 million babies since Roe v. Wade in 1973. Our national debt stands at $30 Trillion (and climbing) and has doubled over the past ten years alone. Addiction to pornography is at epidemic levels both inside and outside the Church and the average age of first-time exposure to porn is now down to nine. Our entertainment is crude, our social media posts hateful, our personal lifestyles indulgent, and our church attendance falling. For all practical purposes, the days of any sense of general righteousness across the American landscape are long gone. Sin is definitely a reproach to the people of the United States.
Is there any hope for America?
America became great because the nation was born in many ways out of a revival. “The Great Awakening” swept the land in the mid-1700s with a flame of righteousness. Out of that, schools were built, principles taught, unity increased, and the personal character of millions of Americans became strong. A nation was born that declared her independence from England and dependence upon a providential and almighty Creator God. What gave America her powerful birth is exactly what is needed for her re-birth: a return to the pursuit of godly righteousness.
America needs Revival in the Church and Awakening in the Streets. American Christians need a new zeal to deny themselves, pick up their crosses, and follow Christ (Mth. 16:24) while lost Americans need to be born again (Jn. 3:3). Short of those two things, we will remain the United States in Reproach.
