James 3:13 (NIV)

“Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.”

The Bible certainly puts a premium on the acquisition of wisdom. King Solomon, when given the chance to ask for anything, put wisdom at the top of his list. Wisdom has been the sought after prize of philosophers throughout all the ages and it should be near the top of the list for followers of Jesus Christ, as well. In fact, God calls us to be as wise as serpents while being as gentle as doves.

So, how do you know when you’ve acquired the kind of wisdom that Scripture describes? By living a “good life,” and by performing “deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.”

By “good life,” James is talking about your lifestyle in general. Does it manifest the Fruit of the Spirit? Does it reflect well on the character of God? Does it provide a solid Christian witness to your watching neighbors, co-workers, and friends? If so, you are proving that you possess Godly wisdom.

The other big aspect of this kind of wisdom is meekness. If you claim to be wise, you might just be arrogant! Godly wisdom is not self-seeking…it does not operate in order to build one’s own kingdom, but rather, the Kingdom of God. It is a quiet form of wisdom, diligently applying biblical truth to everyday situations in a spirit of gentleness and submission to God’s Word.

You say you have wisdom? James says, “Prove it.”
