Ephesians 4:1 (NKJV)

“I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called…”

Paul has spent three chapters magnifying what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ and laying out the doctrines that make it so, and now he gets to an application point by way of the word “beseech”, which means to beg for urgently and anxiously. Paul is moving us from faith to function as he cries out, “I beseech you!”

If the President of the United States called you and wanted to put you in charge of showing your fellow Americans what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ, how would that make you feel? Terrified? Excited? Nauseous? Most likely it would be all three, but this hypothetical situation should help you focus on the reality of Paul’s exhortation to “walk worthy of the calling with which you were called.” As Christians, we have been given a great privilege…a great assignment…and we are to walk that out in a way that honors that reality.

At any given moment, this cry of the Apostle Paul should help you identify those things in your life that are NOT worthy of the calling. Thoughts, words, or actions that do not reflect well the reality of your new life in Christ. Can we be worthy of our calling all the time? Not likely. But, we can be worthy of it more and more each day as we surrender more and more of our lives to His Lordship.
