James 1:5
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”
Note: Let’s begin today’s “Dose” with a quick lesson in hermeneutics, or, how to properly study the Bible. James 1:5 is one that is taken out of context all the time. Although it is certainly true that we all want Godly wisdom, this verse is not speaking to that general context but rather to a very specific one: wisdom needed to endure a trial. Be careful! Passages of scripture are not there to be used like any old ingredient in the pantry – they are there very specifically and must be understand in their original context, before you are free to apply them in general.
So…We ask God for a lot of things when we face trials, don’t we? Peace, health, better finances, repaired relationships, obedient and respectful kids, a new job…but wisdom? Wisdom is invaluable every day of your life, and especially biblical wisdom, but in the middle of a trial? It seems like all we want to do is survive it, but God’s wisdom will do much more for you than just allow you to survive. It will allow you to thrive.
Wisdom during a trial opens your eyes to the spiritual opportunities for personal growth as well as public witness. This Godly wisdom will help you move forward, despite the pain. Trials must be navigated, since you can’t avoid them, but in order to navigate properly you need a reliable guide. For a sailor it’s the stars or a map. For a Christian, it’s Godly wisdom.
Are you facing a trial right now? You need Godly wisdom! So ask for it, and He will give it to you generously.
