Proverbs 3:7-8

Be not wise in your own eyes;  fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.
It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.

Go with your gut! Follow your heart! Pull yourself up by your bootstraps! You got this! We love to pump ourselves up…and we think its helpful to pump each other up…but according to Scripture, self-reliance is the road that leads to destruction (Prv. 16:25).

God knows we have a tendency to evaluate ourselves poorly. You might think too little of yourself…or as in today’s passage, you may think too highly of yourself. After 4 years of college and maybe even a Master’s degree, you are well educated. After several decades of life’s up’s and down’s, you certainly have gained some valuable perspectives and experience. And, after years or decades in the business world, your acumen certainly has been sharpened and honed. Those are all valuable assets on your ledger, but as the Barnes Bible Commentary reminds us:

“The great hindrance to all true wisdom is the thought that we have already attained it.”

Worldly knowledge and experience may serve you well in many arenas, but it is a poor substitute for fearing the Lord and seeking His wisdom. Do you ever ask for advice? Do you regularly ask God for guidance? Do you feel like you can pretty much handle whatever life throws at you? Are you fairly confident that you have what it takes to succeed? Your answers to these questions might mean God is speaking to you right now. Please listen.
