Ephesians 6:9

“Masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Don’t threaten them; remember, you both have the same Master in heaven, and he has no favorites.”

Imagine for a minute if you worked in a place where the employees and their bosses all look out for each other’s best interests. They all paid more attention to one another’s needs than their own. They were all quick to serve, quick to encourage, and quick to forgive. The employees didn’t seek to “get away” with anything and the bosses never took advantage of their authority.

Sounds nice, doesn’t it?

The call of Christ in Ephesians 6:5-9 is exactly that, and it was far more radical then than it is now, remarkably. Slaves were basically property with no rights and masters were like gods with the right to do whatever they wanted to. Christ steps in and through the Apostle Paul he levels the playing field. He did not change roles or responsibilities or the authority structure…He changed hearts and minds…attitudes and actions.

If you are a “boss” or a manager or a business owner, it’s important to remember that God values your employees as much as He values you. They are made in His image just like you are. They deserve the same level of respect and care that you do. Christ did not come to be served, but to serve and give His life as a ransom for many (Mk. 10:45). As a “master,” you are commanded by the Scriptures to do much the same.
