Psalm 125:1-2 (NIV)

Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds his people both now and forevermore.

Do you ever worry about the future? A lot of people do. Is it your health or the health of a loved one? Your financial situation? The stability of your job? Perhaps it’s a relationship that is on the rocks or a wayward child. There is no shortage of things to worry about in a world of uncertainty and deep brokenness, so when you are feeling overwhelmed, unsettled, or insecure…Psalm 125 is a great place to go.

As discussed previously, there are fifteen Psalms of Ascent (120-134) which can be divided up into five groups of three which represent Trouble, Trust, and Triumph as noted by theologian Ray Fowler. Following this pattern, Psalm 125 is a song of Triumph, and rightfully so, as it points to Mount Zion—the literal (at the time) and then eventually eternal resting place of the City of God. Jerusalem has been attacked time and time again, and still experiences that even to this day, yet it remains steadfast as the most holy city on the planet, and there is nothing that man or the devil himself can do to change that. So it is with your security in Jesus Christ.

Some people are like the sand, ever shifting and unstable (Mt. 7:26). Some people are like the sea, restless and unsettled (Is. 57:20, James 1:6). Some people are like the wind, uncertain and inconsistent (Eph. 4:14). But, “Believers are like a mountain—strong, stable, and secure. To every soul that trusts him the Lord says, ‘Thou art Peter’” (Page, cited in Spurgeon). We all have our bad days when worry overtakes us and doubt creeps in, but we must fight to remember and proclaim the TRUTH that our house is NOT built on sand, but on the ROCK of Jesus Christ (Mt. 7:24-27). Just as Mount Zion cannot be destroyed by the circumstances of this life, nor can your ultimate freedom, power, and future as a Child of God!

Those who trust in the Lord and safe and secure (v. 1-2). You are like Mount Zion which cannot be shaken but endures forever. Those who trust in the Lord have a secure inheritance (v. 3). If your faith is in Christ, then your inheritance is secure. The power of the wicked will be broken forever on Judgment Day, and the power of sin will be broken in your life. Your inheritance is kept safe from the wicked, and you are kept safe to receive it. Finally, those who trust in the Lord have a secure future (v. 4-5). if your faith is in Christ, then your future is secure. You have been made good in Christ, and God will do good to those who are good. So, don’t worry! Don’t be afraid! If your faith is in Christ, then you are safe. You are secure.
