Proverbs 10:25

When the storms of life come, the wicked are whirled away, but the godly have a lasting foundation.

As I write this devotional, there are thousands of people in the panhandle of Florida who are reeling and in shock after hurricane Michael ripped into their lives just a few days ago. Entire towns have been decimated. Homes of the rich and middle class and poor had no special dispensation when it came to 150mph winds…a 9-foot storm surge…and pounding rain. For the Believers in those areas, Michael may have wiped away their possessions, but  he could not touch their true foundation.

Hurricanes won’t hit most of us in our lifetimes, but the storms of life surely will. It’s not a matter of IF – it’s a matter of WHEN. The storms may be a battered marriage or a wayward child or financial ruin or the devastation of your health. Some of them only last a day or two while others last for years. Today’s proverb rings true, of course, but it’s certainly easier said than done.

How does our sure and firm foundation (Mth. 7:24-25) impact our lives in the midst of the storms? Peace, comfort, hope, and a proper perspective rise to the top of the list.

Peace: Knowing God will bring you through, one way or another (Phil. 4:7).

Comfort: The Holy Spirit whispers, “It will be ok…” (Mth. 5:4).

Hope: Nothing gets wasted in God’s economy (Jer. 29:11).

Perspective: One day, the storm won’t even be a distant memory (2 Cor. 4:17).

Christ IS your firm and forever foundation, friend. Yes, the storms will come…and at times they may seem to be winning…but in the end, they will ALL be gone and what is left will be beautiful and glorious and safe and valuable and worthwhile. After all…your firm foundation is the Savior of the World and the Creator of the Heavens and the Earth.
