Proverbs 7:4

Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and call understanding your intimate friend.

I have two sisters. I love them deeply and care about the details of their lives…and they feel the same way about me. They care deeply about my best interest and always want what’s best for me. Additionally, I have several close and intimate friends, including my wife. Like my sisters, they have an enormous impact on my life and I know I can go to them with all of my cares and concerns and receive valuable counsel as well.

So it should be with wisdom and understanding!

Godly wisdom and understanding should be great objects of affection in our lives. They not only look out for our best interests, but they also help steer us away from harmful situations as well as destructive people. This is why Solomon uses such emotional and personal language. Most of us would move heaven and earth to help our family members as well as our closest friends and Solomon is urging us to approach wisdom and understanding with the same kind of loyalty and vigor.

Do you spend time in God’s Word, seeking wisdom, knowledge, and understanding? Do you value the insights that He has made freely available to you? Do you lean on scripture as you would a sibling or a close friend? Do you seek out other Believers and ask them to speak truth into your life? To walk with you? To help you grow in your faith? I’m confident that most of us place a great deal of value on our relationships with family and close friends…and we invest our time and energy accordingly. Imagine if we applied the same loyalty and effort to gaining godly wisdom and understanding?
