Matthew 28:16-17

“Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.”

Most of us have plenty of experience going to church. When the hymns or praise songs are played, it would appear that everybody is worshipping the Lord, but most likely, doubt is in the room as well. Does it surprise you that the same thing occurred with the Disciples?

It’s worth noting that these same Disciples were the ones God used to begin turning the world upside down for the sake of the Gospel. Without question, some of them came out of the blocks with a BANG…while others came out with more of a whimper. Although you may struggle with doubt, it does not necessarily mean your faith is insincere.

The doubt we read about in this passage is the same kind of doubt many of us encounter when we are faced with a choice between two options. Do I forsake my past and follow Jesus…or continue living as I always have? Do I risk losing some friends or some position of authority…or do I push aside my interest in Christ for safer waters? Do I slip easily back into my old ways…or do I forge ahead on the long, hard road of obedience?

Jesus has proven Himself time and time again, both in the pages of Scripture as well as in the lives of His followers over the past 2,000+ years. When you struggle with doubt…when you struggle with the decision to follow or forsake…remember the eleven Disciples on that mountain. Although some of them doubted, they still worshipped. Although some of them doubted, they still followed in obedience. Although some of them doubted, God still used them to advance the Gospel all the way from the 1st Century to the day it came knocking on the door of your heart.
