Matthew 5:5
“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”
Imagine if your resume described you as: acquiescent, deferential, resigned, submissive, unassertive, yielding, cowering, cringing, shrinking, naïve, plain, simple, bashful, passive, reserved, sheepish, and timid. I mean…who would hire such a wimp?
While the world may look down on meekness as a personal attribute, Jesus certainly doesn’t. The world (and even the church) says, “Fight!” – Jesus says, “Turn the other cheek.” The world shouts, “Don’t get mad…get even!” – Jesus says, “Pray for those who persecute you.” The world says, “Speak your mind!” – Jesus says, “Be slow to speak.”
Marvin Vincent writes, “Meekness is the opposite of self-assertiveness and self-interest. The meek have a special happiness because they are free of pride and ambition. The gentle or meek are those who accept all as coming from God and demonstrate that same behavior to others in a gentleness of life, which is the fruit of the Spirit. Meekness is an equanimity of spirit that is neither elated nor cast down because it is not occupied with self at all.”
The meek may not rule the world today, but they will certainly rule alongside The King in the end. The meek may not get the spotlight today, but they will certainly bask in The Light in the end. The meek may not win the prize today, but they will certainly be Rewarded Forever in the end.
Blessed indeed are those who follow in the gentle yet resolute footsteps of the Meek and Mild King of the Universe…and indeed they shall inherit the earth.
