Matthew 4:18-20

While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately they left their nets and followed him.

Have you ever wondered why it is that these guys were willing to drop everything in the middle of their workday – quit their job on the spot – and follow a guy they had never met? Who would any of us do that for today? A famous celebrity? A well known Christian leader? The President of the United States? I doubt it.

Simon and Peter made a snap decision and it radically changed the direction of their lives. They didn’t pray about it (Phil 4:6) and they didn’t seek wisdom by speaking to a multitude of counselors (Proverbs 15:22). They just dropped what they were doing and followed Jesus’ command.

While we can’t place ourselves into that unique context of 1st century Jerusalem, we must acknowledge that Jesus has given us far more commands through His Word than just the general, “Follow me.” The question is: Are we following them? Stop getting angry. Quit speaking words of death and hurt. Choose purity. Help a neighbor. Give generously. Forgive.

As we go through our day, there will be a multiplicity of opportunities where, because we know enough of God’s Word, Jesus is essentially calling us to make a snap decision and “follow Him” in obedience…right then and right there. Will your drop your net today and follow Him…right then and right there?
