Philippians 3:15-16

“All of us who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. Only let us live up to what we have already attained.”

Paul has been talking about pressing on in life to pursue the things of God, and eventually, to obtain the ultimate prize in Heaven. His first point in today’s passage is that “mature” Christians should be living like he just described. The definition of “mature”, of course, is a moving target. I like to think of it this way: Your Christianity isn’t an aspect of your life…it’s at the center of your life. You don’t build it in…you build on it. If that’s you…congratulations! If not…keep moving forward!

Paul also leaves room for the less mature…the less convinced. If there are some theological waters that are difficult for you to navigate…some teachings that are hard for you to accept…just ask God to help you see His truth. In the meantime, live out your faith to the best of your ability according to what you already understand from Scripture.

Unfortunately, there are too many Christians and too many churches that put off the vibe that you should know everything already! If you do have questions or concerns, this kind of atmosphere will keep you from voicing them for fear of condemnation or embarrassment. Shame on us! Once you become a Christian, you begin a journey that eventually leads to Heaven. It’s just like going to school: elementary, followed by middle, followed by high school, college, a master’s degree and maybe even a PhD.

My siblings always used to say “Act your age, not your shoe size!” I’m pretty sure that applies to our walk with the Lord, too.
