James 1:23-24 (NIV)

“Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.”

Why do we look in the mirror so much? It seems that whenever one is near, we find a way to sneak a glance at ourselves. How does your hair look? Is your make-up even? Do you need some more lipstick? Do your clothes look sharp? Does that outfit make you look fat? Should you un-tuck your shirt to hide your potbelly?

Imagine for a minute going out of your way to find a mirror and then noticing that there are flakes in your hair, mustard stains around your mouth, an ink stain on your shirt pocket, and a piece of duct tape stuck to your rear end. Yikes! However, you are in such a hurry that instead of dealing with what the mirror has revealed, you get back to your day and within a few minutes, you forget about what you had seen in the mirror. My kids would call that an “Epic Fail.” God agrees.

Getting into God’s Word will reveal things about who you are, what you are doing and why, and how you feel about other people and even the Lord Himself. Like a mirror, it makes your personal reality very clear. The only question is…what will you do about what you see? Will you take steps to correct your “appearance,” or will you walk away and forget about it?
