Ephesians 4:26-27 (NLT)

“And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil.”

When was the last time your anger led to something good? Odds are, those instances are few and far between. Most of the time it leads to hurtful words, hurtful actions, and an atmosphere of bitterness…not to mention an open door for the destructive lies of the devil.

Anger is a natural human response and not necessarily a sin in and of itself. It’s what you do with it that counts. First of all, Paul urges us to control it once it shows up. Your anger is like a caged animal waiting to get out and attack. It’s dangerous and should be treated that way.

Secondly, anger needs to be dealt with right away. Don’t let it fester, not even for one night! Seek forgiveness…share your feelings…be honest…and be ready to forgive or ask forgiveness.

Finally, make sure your family understands what can happen if you are struggling with anger. The devil wants your family life to be miserable and anger gives him the tool he needs to make that happen. Dad’s anger, mom’s anger, the kid’s anger…he will use it all against you. Don’t let him!

APPLICATION: Discuss as a family what makes each of you angry and what kind of sin that can lead to. Be honest, but don’t get angry about it! Don’t use this as a time to attack, but to heal. Discuss loving ways to deal with each other’s anger when it shows up. Pray together and ask God to help all of you control your anger.
