Proverbs 24:3-4 (NLT)
By wisdom a house if built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.
What are you “binge watching” on Netflix or Amazon Prime these days? What shows are you capturing with your TEVO? What series has its claws into you with an effective hook at the end of each subsequent episode and/or season? I’m not throwing “the book” at our enjoyment of entertainment, be it streaming online or podcasts or a tv series or going to the movies…but I am using today’s verses to question how well we are using our time. Is your use of time ready for a Heavenly Audit?
Mine certainly isn’t.
Wisdom. Knowledge. Understanding. These subjects weave in and out of virtually every book in the bible, but especially within the pages of the Book of Proverbs. God, through Solomon (the principal writer), wants your “house” – your own walk with God, your marriage, your family, your business, your ministry, etc. – to be strong, beautiful, and well adorned. God has no interest in any of His children living in spiritual or relational or even economic poverty. Our Heavenly Father wants us to live in wellness and maturity and victory and to live a life of impact and meaning. This is, in fact, God’s will for your life…but you must do your part, which requires wisdom, knowledge, and understanding.
Far too many of us spend far too much time building houses that don’t really matter. Houses for escape or distraction or pleasure. We choose entertainment over knowledge…the easy way out over wisdom…and emotional and self-righteous reaction over understanding and self-reflection. As a result, we build weak houses that are filled with cheap fixtures and tacky trinkets. The world says, “Nice place!” while the Lord says, “I want so much more for you than you want for yourself.” There is a time for fun and games and entertainment…but you can’t build a life on that. Only by following the Master Builder and His Plans can any of us hope to live in the houses our Father wants to help us build.
